News, May 2003 IN THIS ISSUE:
**************************** I have chosen to do the newsletter in a format that I am comfortable in. I hope you find the information useful, but bear with me, as I am not as technically adept as some of you. HELPNET QUESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF MAY There were three items discussed in the listserve for the month of May. Discussed were- ways to merge photos into panoramas, why a printer printed in color only on the front of a companies letterhead and how to stop a program from starting up automatically when the computer boots up. You will find answers to these and many other questions by going to the HelpNet archives at http://www.ptfolkschool.org/helpnet/archives.htm. I’m sure you will find the information there very useful. By the way, I am the one who posed the printer question. At Jon’s suggestion, I looked a little closer at the printer (with the help of another very technical person) and found that the printer is new enough to detect the color on the front of the letterhead. The settings were changed from automatic so the printer now knows to print everything as if it were plain paper. Don’t you wish computers and printers would not try to think for you! Just a reminder to get those updates done for Windows 98. As we learned in April, Microsoft will no longer support this operating system after this month. Time for an upgrade? Perhaps its time to give it some thought! There was one item of interest posted by Jon to the listserve for those of us who have websites. It is a survey to discover the difference between what we think our websites should do versus what the public is looking for. You can get there by going to http://www.guidestar.org/news/features/web_users_want.stm. Just a reminder that Jon mentioned that the 2003 Organizers Collaborative Grassroots Technology Conference will be held in New Haven, June 20-21. Contact Jon if you are interested in going and/or sharing a ride. You can get information about previous conferences by going to http://organizenow.net/conference.html. HELPNET INFORMATIONAL GATHERING On May 28th we met at the Bangor Public Library for an informal meeting to discuss the benefits of the Organizer’s Database program. Jon was gracious enough to give us a demo of this powerful but user-friendly program. For those of us in attendance it proved to be an interesting preview. The download for the program is free but donations are accepted and encouraged. Jon has offered to discuss another time to demonstrate this program for folks that are interested but were unable to attend the meeting on May 28th. If you were looking for a way to track your donations or mail contacts, it would be worth the time to check it out. I have learned a lot from the questions and answered listed in the listserv and look forward to expanding my horizons by gathering knowledge from this info. I have also found it helpful to check out the info in Woody Notes (something I learned about from the listserv) and encourage folks to check it out. There seems to be a lot of information there. Enjoy your summer!
